Engagement Survey

Context

In April last year we completed our first ever staff Engagement Survey, achieving an engagement score of 69.8% - a fairly good result to start with. The 2022 survey also clearly showed us several areas of focus to improve our performance, and we’ve been hard at work addressing these since.

As we approached the 2023 survey we felt a little uncertain about how staff might respond. In some ways our external environment was getting tougher – while COVID concerns had (mostly) reduced, cost of living pressures have increased. There’s also been lots of change and pressure in the NDIS space with increasing compliance requirements and several reviews creating some uncertainty. Internally, we’ve been through lots of change, including launching our new MyForce system only a few weeks before the survey was conducted.

Survey Response

We had an excellent response to the survey – nearly 10% up from 2022, within a two-week survey period (we kept the survey open for 3.5 weeks last year to try to reach our response target). Lots of staff also took the time to answer the qualitative (text) questions which is really helpful.

Thank you to everyone who put time and thought into the survey! We really, really appreciate it.

Staff Engagement Result

My Supports’ 2023 Engagement Score is 79.5%, an increase of 9.6% since last year.

This is an amazing improvement in 18 months – it’s quite rare for results to increase by this much in consecutive surveys.

We should be proud of this achievement which reflects very positively on the hard work of lots of people, especially including our local team leaders.

Survey Key Messages

There’s a range of survey detail and you can explore all the detail in the Engagement Survey report. Here are some of the key messages:

  • Key areas of strength include Purpose & Culture and Safety & Well-being.

  • Our biggest improvements were Tools, Resources & Development and Collaboration, Communication & Change.

  • Our least-improved area was Innovation & Empowerment. We’re keen to make this a major focus area in 2024.

  • In spite of some improvement, we can also do more in:

  • Rewards & Feedback: how we reward our people (pay & other recognition).

  • Tools, Resources & Development: especially systems and processes; also career development.

  • Collaboration, Communication & Change.

  • We’ve improved engagement for younger staff and in the first year or so of employment.

  • We have slightly lower engagement in older staff (50+) and long-termers (5 years +).

You can also read summaries of the “text” responses staff gave in the survey report.

What Next?

Our engagement score is a very significant improvement, but we also acknowledge it’s not unanimous! More than one in five staff feel disengaged, and there’s some really useful constructive feedback about things we need to continue to improve. If you’re someone who doesn’t quite feel the same way about My Supports as others, we want you to know we hear you too and we know we have more to do.

The work to plan next steps began at Leadership Conference in November where we presented the Engagement Survey results and discussed priority areas and ideas for inclusion in the 2024 plan.
